Feathers and Shadows
Digital painting and Photography 2017
By Justin Gedak
For something a little different, I thought it would be interesting to show what the reference photo looks like compared to the finished artwork. I took this photo during a shoot with local model Vanessa Pintea out in Fort Langley last year. I've based quite a few of my recent paintings on her. She has a warrior-like strength that I find inspiring, and her exotic looking features make for really interesting and beautiful portraits.
I'm still a little torn as to what to call these digital portraits that I do. Most of them are sort of a mix between digital painting and photo manipulation. I'm thinking just labeling them as digital art seems to make the most sense.
Quite a bit of my earlier portraits were based on other people's photography, and a lot of the time selfies taken by the models themselves. I'm planning on doing some more photo shoots soon with some new models. I think basing the artwork on my own photography adds an extra level of depth to them.
I'm also planning on doing more traditional oil paintings! Just lately I've been in a digital sort of mood.
Open Edition prints and merchandise are available at Society6
For anyone wanting to sign up to my mailing list, I'm giving away a free full resolution digital download of "Born for Battle". It's a very large image, 9000 x 6750 300dpi, and I figured it would be interesting for people to be able to zoom right in to see the details and brushwork. Also, anyone with access to a good printer can print off their own print of it without having to order anything online.
