Mermaid and the Lighthouse
Digital Painting and Photo Manipulation of a Gothic Mermaid
Near a Lighthouse on a Foggy Shore
by Justin Gedak 2016
I've been wanting to do some more mermaid paintings for awhile, and now I'm finally getting to painting them. I feel like there's a shortage of interesting mermaid artwork out there. My favorites have always been from artists like John William Waterhouse, and I'd like to think that my upcoming mermaid portraits are based that theme. A sort of Pre-Raphaelite style, but also with gothic undertones.
The artwork was created with a combination of digital painting and photo manipulation using Corel Painter, Adobe Photoshop, and a Wacom Intuos Pro Tablet. For this one, I think I literally digitally painted on over a thousand layers.
Most of my recent art has been based on my own photography, but with this I decide to purchase some stock photography to use as reference from Len Kaltman at Art Reference Source. I've been finding that using my own photography all of the time can be a little boring, and I think this sort of rekindled the creative spark in me.

For anyone wanting to sign up to my mailing list, I'm giving away a free full resolution digital download of "Born for Battle". It's a very large image, 9000 x 6750 300dpi, and I figured it would be interesting for people to be able to zoom right in to see the details and brushwork. Also, anyone with access to a good printer can print off their own print of it without having to order anything online.
